Why Vulnerability is Your Greatest Strength

A popular belief in our society is that vulnerability equals weakness.  I admit that I was once a member of that club.  But, Oprah credits her success to her willingness to be vulnerable—to show up and be seen.

Years ago I taught a class at a local massage school.  I usually pride myself on my teaching ability.  However, this class was a disaster!  I remember a woman named Rosie from that class.  The reason I remember her is that it seems like I ran into her everywhere.  It seems that Rosie showed up as a constant reminder of my failure. Every time I saw her, I’d hide my head and run.  She was a reminder from the Universe that I pushed down and ignored.  One day a friend invited me to a seminar.  You can guess who the teacher was.  Yup, Rosie!  I decided that it was time to face my demons.  When I walked in, Rosie gave me a polite smile.  I cringed.  Then I walked right up to her and blurted out, “Rosie, I have a confession to make.  Every time I see you, I hide in shame because years ago you were in my class that I bombed.  You are a constant reminder of how badly I did. I’m tired of giving my shame power over me and that’s why I need to say this.  Thanks for listening.” She looked at me with bewilderment and quietly stated, “sorry, I don’t remember any class but you do look familiar.”  In that moment, we both laughed together.  All my shame vanished. Abracadabra!  It was magical.  My courage to be vulnerable freed my shame.

Secrets erode our well-being.  I wonder how many folks resist asking for support because they are slaves to their shameful secrets.  They fear judgment.  I invite you to examine what you are hiding and where you could risk being more courageous and vulnerable.  You just might love the freedom it brings you!

911 John Just Keeps on Giving…

I attended a Qi Gong seminar last weekend. But the highlight for me was actually not even the seminar (which was wonderful, too).  You see, the seminar kick-off  was 911 John.  John was a 911 firefighter who told his moving and powerful story.  There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.  I decided, at that point that I needed to seek him out.  The next day I went up to John.  I took his hands in my hands, looked into his eyes through my moist eyes, and simply said, “thank you.”  He got it.  We embraced for what seemed to be a very long embrace.  There are no words for my gratitude for what this brave and courageous man did.  I felt deeply privileged to be able to witness and be in the presence of this man.

As I was thinking about this amazing experience the next day, it was as if I could hear John saying to me, “what if you felt this level of gratitude and honor for yourself?”  My first response was to blow off the thought.  Then I thought about how I would have felt if 911 John had blown me off.  I looked in the mirror and began saying those words to myself.  Powerful.  I challenge you to try it…

Thanks for the miracle, John.  You just keep on giving….

Hypnosis…”but will I cluck like a chicken?”

This is one of the first questions I hear from folks when I tell them I do hypnosis.  They get this scared, far-away look in their eyes, and then…out it comes. It always makes me chuckle.  We’re so media programmed.

Not only will you not cluck like a chicken, you will most likely remember everything.  You see, hypnosis is really just deep relaxation.  It’s a very pleasant state, kind of like how you feel as you’re drifting off to sleep.  When the conscious mind is deeply relaxed, the subconscious mind comes forward.  It is the subconscious mind we want to access in hypnosis because the subconscious drives the bus.  If that were not true, you could simply make up your mind to quit an addictive habit and it would be a done deal.  But, we all know how effective that is, right?  Remember what happened to your New Year’s Resolution?

People engage in hypnosis for a myriad of reasons because it gets to the heart of the matter: the cause.  And when we access the heart, we bring in love and compassion.  This approach neutralizes the original trigger, which gives you a peace that you may never have felt before.  Truly liberating.

Hypnosis is a companion to EFT.  EFT paves the way by getting you comfortable with uncomfortable emotions.  This opens the heart with a readiness for hypnosis.  They’re a great team!

Appreciating my Dad

Dear Dad,

Had you lived a few months longer, you would be 101 years old today.

I am blessed to have had you here for so long.  I never told you this in person, but here are some things you taught me:

*ABK.  Always be kind.  All people are sensitive and deserve respect. “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”  You never preached this.  You lived it.

*Family first.  I felt loved and safe no matter what.  This was not necessarily communicated in words, but by your love in action.

*Share your gifts.  You were all about serving others.  This ranged from a broken appliance, carpentry work or volunteering at the hospital.   You were always a first responder.

You were a man of few words but a huge heart.  Perhaps that is why everyone who knew you loved being in your presence.  You were an amazing role-model for me.  That’s the best part.

I’m so happy that I told you often how proud I was of you.  I hope you could really take that in.

I miss you, Pop, a lot.  But knowing that you’re free of a restricted body to pursue your next exciting chapter helps ease my sadness tremendously.

I hope you have a good birthday…Love always,  Laurel

How To Transform Your End of Winter Funk…

Actually, the ‘end of winter funk’ can arrive any time of year, it just so happens that it visits me in this time of year.  I’m tired of winter and I just feel blue.   I have learned to use my power to transform this heaviness in a safe and effective way:

I engage the Buddhist practice of accepting the unwanted emotions by naming them.  You can create a breakthrough just by naming the feeling and saying, “depressed,” or “funky,” Fighting the funk by making it wrong or pushing it down, only strengthens the pattern.  Naming unwanted emotions is so easy that we often fail to realize how powerful and effective this creative process truly can be.  Next, just give it space to hang out with you.  Easy.

This simple one, two, disengages the resistance.  Try giving your feelings the respect that you want others to give you. You might just notice that offering yourself acceptance by acknowledging your unwanted emotions tend to lift your spirits and brighten even a dreary winter day.  Let me know how it works for you…
